Battle of Longwoods Education Day

On Friday May 3rd, 2019 the UTMRS will be hosting our annual Education Day. This interactive day presents information about the events and lives of people in Southwestern Ontario during the War of 1812. Education Day is geared to the Grade 7 curriculum, and has been attended eagerly by many teachers and considered a valuable experience for students.

Here is some information about the event and how you can get your students involved:

Date: Friday May 3rd, 2019
Location: Longwood’s Conservation Area, 5 Kilometers West of Delaware on Highway #2
Time: 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM

How it works…

  • Each class rotates through 10-12 education stations
  • Re-enactors give presentations in period clothing
  • Each presentation highlights some aspect of life during the War of 1812
  • Presenters encourage student questions, and invite students to participate

Topics include:

  • Life of a Soldier during the War of 1812
  • Musical Warriors – Fife and Drum discussion and demonstration
  • Weapons of War and musket demonstration
  • Artillery demonstration – Yes we have real cannons!
  • Colonel Thomas Talbot – First person re-creation of the famous Colonel
  • Period Medicine and Surgery during the War of 1812
  • The Duel – Two gentlemen settle a matter of honour with pistols
  • Mini Militia – Students are given a “musket” and put through 1812 style military drills
  • Shelley’s Nature Tour – Healing with Herbs and Old Time Remedies

Important Information:

  • Cost to attend is $10.00 per student
  • A $100.00 (non-refundable) deposit is required to secure your place
  • There is no cost for teachers and adult chaperones
  • Balance owing for each class will be collected at the event
  • This is a rain or shine event, students should be prepared for all weather
  • Unfortunately no bad weather deposit refunds can be provided
  • Students, teachers and chaperones are asked to bring their own brown bag lunches.
  • We strongly encourage all classes to arrive between 9:15 AM and 9:45 AM

On arrival at the site, please have an envelope ready with the balance owing for the students attending, labelled with the following information:

  1. School name
  2. Name of school contact
  3. Number of students
  4. Amount of money inside

All classes must arrange their own bus transport to the event, in accordance with the policies set out by your board. Cost of transport is not included in the student registration charge levied by the UTMRS

    Please provide a deposit cheque for $100.00 (non-refundable) made out to the Upper Thames Military Re-enactment Society and mail it to:

Registration is now open and will be accepted until April 8th, 2019. A confirmation of registration along with directions and other information will be sent to each teacher as the class information and deposits are received.
